Michael Henchard’s life is a series Essay

Michael Henchard’s life is a series of terrible disasters, which leads to self destruction. However, deciding whether Michael Henchard is responsible for his own downfall and to what extent is something which needs a lot of deliberation before getting an answer. There are different factors which need to be looked at before deciding this, such as whether it was Henchard’s fault, or whether he could have stopped the disaster from happening. The only way to determine whether or not Henchard is totally responsible for his own downfall is to look at each disaster which occurs in the novel and then see whether he could have prevented it or not. Starting directly from the beginning, the novel begins with Michael Henchard travelling with his wife and daughter and then stopping at a furmity tent for some food. Michael straight away decided that he wanted some rum in his furmity. â€Å"He winked to her, and passed up his basin in reply to her nod; when she took a bottle from under the table, slily measured out a quantity of its contents, and tipped the same into the man’s furmity. The liquor poured in was rum. † He soon got drunk after several helpings of it and when his wife tried to quieten him a little. He then began to ramble about how better off he would be without her. â€Å"I married at eighteen, like the fool that I was; and this is the consequence o’t. † It is clear to the audience that Henchard is a rude and careless character. Henchard’s attitude and behaviour is influenced by alcohol, and it appears to the audience that his wife, Susan is aware of this. â€Å"†¦ his wife, who seemed accustomed to such remarks, acted as if she did not hear them†¦ † The scene is set for a foreboding novel when Hardy expresses his feelings about nature and mankind in the first part of the novel. He compares nature and mankind. â€Å"In contrast with the harshness of the act just ended within the tent was the sight of several horses crossing necks and rubbing each other lovingly, as they waited in patience to be harnessed†¦ † After Michael spending his evening drinking rum, he began auctioning his wife to anybody who would buy her. A sailor offered Michael Henchard 5 guineas for both hi wife and daughter. Michael would not sell them for any less. Susan gave Henchard one last chance to say he didn’t mean it before she left with the sailor as it wasn’t a joke no more. â€Å"A joke? Of course it is not a joke! † Shouted her husband. With this his wife and daughter left with the successful bidder. Michael Henchard losing his wife and child was the first disaster. This disaster was without a doubt Michael’s fault. He had decided to have rum with his furmity, even though he had had it before, knowing that he makes him drunk, and he knew he had tried to sell his wife before. He should have known not to have too much, if any liquor, and because he chose to do so in the knowledge that he has a bit of a drinking problem, this makes the whole disaster hid fault. I do not think that any blame can be passed onto his wife. Susan felt the contempt that Michael had for her. Henchard shows he has integrity once sober, when he later regrets selling his wife and daughter and goes to search for her. â€Å"Well I must walk about till I find her†¦ † This shows a positive side to Henchard, for taking the time to recover the mistake he made. He also made an oath not to drink for 21 years, due to his hideous behaviour the previous night. In contrast to this, he later blames Susan for his atrocious attitude and behaviour and appears very angry at her. â€Å"†¦ seize her, why didn’t she know better than being me into this disgrace! † He roared out. † In the next part of the novel, Susan finds Henchard as a successful businessman as mayor of a small town called Castorbridge. â€Å"Mr. Henchard- now habited no longer as a great personage, but as a thriving business man. † Henchard has worked hard and had a lot of determination to get to where he is now. He needs to continue being successful and hard working in order to prevent his own downfall, as Henchard has much more to lose now. Henchard meets a Scottish man called Donald Farfrae by accident but takes a liking to him and employs him in order to increase his wealth. Farfrae has inventive machines which are useful to trade. â€Å"†¦ it is true that I am in the corn trade†¦ I have some inventions useful to the trade†¦ † Farfrae appears to be a helpful, kind, gentleman, who is willing to help and is a good citizen. Hardy describes how the town of Castorbridge have already taken a liking to Farfrae. The audience can view Henchard’s jealousy of Farfrae. â€Å"By this time he had completely taken possession of the hearts of the Three Mariner’s inmates. † After 19 years ‘Henchard’s daughter’, Elizabeth-Jane returns with a message from his wife Susan. Henchard is over-whelmed to see EJ again. He shows her around his beautiful home and makes her feel very welcome. He is highly surprised to hear that his wife whom he had sold many years ago remains alive. â€Å"Oh— Susan is— still alive? † He asked with difficulty. By Hardy expressing how Henchard speaks about Susan reflects his true feelings for her. Henchard doesn’t necessarily love Susan still, but he does show contempt for her towards EJ. Henchard informs Farfrae of his disastrous past when he sold his wife and child EJ. â€Å"Well, I lost my wife nineteen years ago or so -by my own fault†¦ † By Henchard admitting to doing something wrong shows he has integrity again. By Henchard being completely honest with his business partner, the audience see the positive side to him come out again. Henchard’s downfall continues from his relationship with Farfrae. Hardy describes the liking Henchard has for Farfrae. This is used to make Henchard’s downfall look bigger than if Henchard wasn’t so involved and close to Farfrae. Henchard and Susan are not lovers anymore and Susan meets him at the ‘ring’, an amphitheatre near Castorbridge which Hardy describes as,†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ seldom had place in the amphitheatre, that of happy lovers. † Even though Susan and Henchard are not close anymore, Henchard shows sensitivity towards Susan and begins their conversation in a peculiar way. â€Å"I don’t drink anymore. † This is Henchard wanting to prove a point to Susan that he regrets what he did, by telling her that he now feels responsible for his actions shows a positive side to Henchard. Susan and EJ see a lot more of Henchard and after a while EJ becomes closer to Michael and spends more time with him than she does her mother. As the bond grows between the two, Henchard requests for EJ’s name to be changed to Miss. Henchard in its place of Miss. Newson. â€Å"Now, Susan, I want to have her called Miss. Henchard- not Miss. Newson†¦ it is her legal name-so it may as well be made her usual name- I don’t like t’other name at all for my own flesh and blood†¦. She won’t object. † â€Å"No. O no. But-† â€Å"Well, then, I shall do it,† said he, peremptorily. The audience see a stubborn and self-centred side to Michael here. In contrast to this the audience can also see how much Henchard wants EJ to become part of his family again by name. This again shows that he is sorry for what he done. Michael seems rather pushy towards Susan. Susan is slightly hesitant about the whole situation. Taking a situation like this upon himself, without his wife actually agreeing is very selfish of Henchard. The audience notices Susan’s hesitance and begin to sense an explanation for this. Hardy includes another character Abel Whittle in order to illustrate the variation in character between Henchard and Farfrae. Abel is employed by Henchard and when Abel is late Henchard uses an insensitive approach on Whittle. Quite the reverse to this Farfrae shows a more kind and gentle approach towards him. This sparks jealousy of Henchard on Farfrae. A sense of disruption in their relationship occurs and the audience can see the beginning of Henchard’s downfall. Henchard also becomes jealous of Farfrae when he begins to bond with EJ. Henchard doesn’t want to run the risk of losing EJ therefore dispenses with Farfrae. â€Å"Mr. Farfrae’s time as my manager is drawing to a close- isn’t it Farfrae? † He did this because he loves EJ, but he also wants to keep his good name and does not wish for Farfrae to take over everything. Hardy is clever, in the way he creates the characters Henchard and Farfrae. He makes Henchard’s character the complete opposite to that of Farfrae. This gives the audience a great understanding and knowledge of each character; therefore they’re able to predict what will occur after each turning point to each character. Henchard realises he is in yet another disaster. Michael had not too long before his wife and daughter had found him, spent the night with a woman called Lucetta. He had then promised to marry her so she can keep her virtue. He did this thinking that Susan and EJ had died. This of course means he cannot marry Lucetta. Susan becomes to unwell to leave her bed, therefore Henchard and EJ are expected to look after her. In the mean time Lucetta tells Henchard she wants her letters back, and that she wishes to meet him at the antelope hotel. â€Å"†¦ I shall be in the coach, which changes horses at the antelope hotel at half past five on Wednesday evening; I shall be wearing a Paisley shawl with a red centre, and this may be easily found. I should prefer this plan of receiving them to having them send. – I remain still, yours ever. ‘LUCETTA’ â€Å". Hardy includes a lot of specific description in Lucetta’s letter, which shows a strong character to Lucetta. Thomas Hardy has a strong point of putting across the personalities of characters to the audience. Michael is in a bit of a tricky situation here, with Susan too ill to get out of bed, and Lucetta requesting to see him. Henchard has put himself in this mess in the first place, by assuming that Susan and EJ were dead. On the other hand Henchard shows positive again by being honest with Lucetta, informing her of the unexpected arrival of his ‘who he thought was dead’ wife and child. When the traumatic death of Mrs. Henchard occurs, the lonely sad life of Michael Henchard appears. The only person he now cares about and has got left is Elizabeth Jane. EJ has lost her mother and Henchard wants EJ to know who her father is. EJ is originally shocked at what she has just heard but then settles nicely and begins called him dad. The next catastrophe which happens, Henchard walks straight into himself. Susan left a letter in an envelope for Henchard stating â€Å"Not to be opened until the wedding of EJ†. The audience immediately know that Henchard will open the letter by the anxious character which Hardy has created. EJ isn’t really Henchard’s daughter. Henchard feels that fate is against him and he begins to feel separated from EJ. Without Henchard’s eagerness and self-concerned attitude towards everything, Henchard would be able to continue his happy life with his daughter, oblivious to the fact that she isn’t his own. Hardy’s efforts to put across the personality of Michael Henchard at the beginning of the novel are very successful. Throughout the novel Henchard’s downfall has just increased by the day. The language used at the beginning of the novel is exceptionally descriptive. First impressions of Henchard are positive from reading the first page. The negative side begins to show when he reaches the furmity tent. By chapter 31 Hardy shows that Henchard has sunk socially and financially. He has to go and live with Joshua Jopp and refuses to see anyone. â€Å"Socially he had received a startling fillip downwards; and, having already lost commercial buoyancy from rash transactions, the velocity of his descent in both aspects became accelerated every hour. † Farfrae and EJ decide to get married. Henchard shows integrity by attending but EJ just can’t forgive Henchard for what he did and walks away form him. He bought a goldfinch as a wedding present, which Hardy uses as a symbol of Henchard’s life. Some people may have different opinions on why Henchard went downhill. Some people may put it down to fate. Others may think that Henchard is entirely responsible for all that happened. Hardy leaves this decision quite widely open. Henchard’s character has an extreme effect on other people and how their lives are lived, especially EJ’s.

Would you recommend that an employer use a forced distribution approach to performance appraisals? I would recommend a forced distribution list to organizations that are large in size and are looking to create a process oriented approach. About 20% of Fortune 1,000 companies and growing are using this approach. â€Å"Some say forced ranking is not only the best method, but an essential practice to turn a struggling company into a market-dominating one.† (Bates, 2003) This approach is the best way to identify your high performing individuals and also the bottom performs who should be helped out. The high performers should be given promotions, financial incentives and training to grow within the company. A leadership development program can also be started after identifying the high performers. The low performers should be put on a performance improvement plan to get help. Low performers are not automatically fired for being in one bracket – warnings should always be given first. It should be looked at as a development tool. Forced ranking engages the manager to provide assessments of employees and forces them to communicate the tough stuff with their employees. It holds the managers accountable for their workforce. â€Å"The great value of using a forced ranking process doesn’t result merely from plunking people into different buckets,† he says. â€Å"The payoff comes from the action that is taken with each person following the assessment sessions.† (Bates, 2003) What are the Pro’s and Con’s? Pros: Creates and sustains a high-performance culture. Employees know where they stand at all times and if they are not performing well they can be given the opportunity for improvement using a performance appraisal system. For the high performing employees they are rewarded and motivated to continue performing. â€Å"Lets employees know where they stand. One of the common complaints from employees is about the lack of feedback on their performance. Forced ranking sends a clear message as to how people stand, or fall† (Sprenkle, 2002). The systems forces managers to have tough conversations with direct reports they may have been avoided. There is a  more disciplined approach to the management process. Managers cannot ignore performance issues with this approach. Can easily match employee performance to compensation and year-end bonus. Can motivate employees to increase their performance if they know that their compensation depends on this. (Lipman, 2012) Cons: Employees are going to want feedback more regularly to make sure they are performing well. â€Å"Some companies really do have a lot of high performers, so forced ranking eliminates great people and damages the culture.† (Bersin, May) If an employee is surprised by their rating they will most likely be demotivated. â€Å"A study by Drake University professor Steve Scullen, shows that forced ranking loses its effectiveness after a couple of years, since the average quality of workers increases and there are fewer â€Å"C† players to identify.† (Alsever, 2008)Can create a competitive environment that does not encourage team work. So, they beat him. In fact, within a few minutes 4 officers had badly kicked Rodney King, shocked him, and used a taser gun and batons. Rodney King sustained eleven skull fractures and major kidney damage (VanHise, n.d.). Had it not been for George Holliday no one would have known of this in-humane behavior. George lived in a nearby flat and happened to have a camera with which he recorded the entire incident. He later gave the tape to a local news channel and by the next day, March 4th 1991, the video was playing on news channels everywhere (BBC, 2002). LAPD maintained that officers acted in self-defense. But the now infamous George Holliday video showed a merciless beating of a man who apparently possessed no weapons of any kind and was under the influence of alcohol and looked to be harmless. The video tape got humongous publicity, and due to the public outrage brought on by it, prosecutors filed charges against some of the police officers involved that night (BBC, 2002). ... Everyone reacted with disbelief but for many, the very first emotion they felt was anger. Jury’s decision was the last spark needed to ignite riots from thousands of people from suppressed communities of Los Angeles (CNN Wire Staff. 2011). Three days of rioting ensued causing a loss of nearly $1 billion in L.A. alone. The riots then extended to other U.S. cities as well leading to 12000 arrests, 2000 reported injuries and 55 deaths. The extensive riots led to a federal civil rights trial of the four accused officers (Delk, 1995). This time around justice was served. The grand jury returned indictments against the officers on the 4th of August. The indictments were for three of the police officers for knowingly and deliberately harming an unarmed individual. Koon was accused because he allowed this illegal act to proceed and did not make an attempt to prevent it from happening. A compensation of 3.8 million dollars was given to Rodney as well (Linder, 2011). That beating on Mar ch 3, 1991 was not King’s last run-in with the law. Using this movie I plan on analyzing the movie through different scenes of the typical activities of the sorority girls on campus and comparing them to how college life is today and what could be done differently. When Zeta, a now popular sorority, throws a mixer party the same night as popular PIM, all of the girls going through rush and all of the fraternity boys enjoy their evening at Zeta instead of PIM. Girls are initiated at the party through ‘sacrificial rights’ because they still have their virginity, music is played for everyone to dance to, and everyone enjoys their nights. These girls are focused on looking good now and being popular. Girls are very similar but a little different today. In today’s society in the typical college experience, girls are not initiated in this way and girls do not throw the parties. The girls, instead of throwing their own parties, get all dressed up and head out to other fraternities to listen to music, drink and get together with different guys. Several girls nowadays waste their time and throw away their good morals every weekend, when they coul d be choosing better alternatives such as a staying in for the weekend or at least one night and study or relax with some friends. Time management and studying are two of the hardest strategies to master as a college student. Unfortunately when we have free time we cling to more fun activities at all times and then get caught up later when it is the last possible second to do homework and we realize we should have been working on homework rather than partying. Studying is not the most fun activity nor does it sound better than going out with friends to drink or participate in crazy college activities; however, everyone has to do it eventually and it would just be easier if you studied a little every free moment and then you would have more free time later. You would be more successful if you thought about every possible outcome of each choice clearly before doing anything. In the movie, after the Zeta girls become popular and look prettier, thanks to Shelley, they set up a tent at the involvement fair. All of the students rush towards their tent because they have food, games, and calendars of the girls looking t heir best. The Zetas are getting more involved around the campus, as students should, but through popularity not service. From this popularity the Zetas go downhill from there and turn into the popular rude crowd to those who do not ‘belong.’ The Zeta’s stopped being who they were before Shelley became the house mother, the smart, nerdy, different crowd, and became the jerks who judged people off appearances. When trying to decide on bids for their house, they talked about how they had seen one of the girls before and thought they were weird and shouldn’t be allowed in their house. The Zeta’s stopped focusing on academics and their true personalities and tried to change for the ‘better’ when it was clearly for the worse. Involvement is a key to surviving in college. You should get involved to make new friends, find others like yourself, develop study groups, and stress-reliever outlet clubs. However, when you try to be involved with the rest of the campus through primarily popularity and parties, you are getting ‘involved’ in all of the wrong ways. Instead of changing to be the popular crowd by looking hot and becoming a preppy jerk to ‘fit in,’ just express yourself more and get out in the real world to try and make more meaningful friendships that could last a lifetime. If people could be more accepting and friendly instead of being quick to judge, everyone would have more friends and the world would be a better place. Acceptance is one of the biggest problems especially at a college where if you aren’t accepted you just hide from everyone and get discouraged. Everyone as a whole should work to be more accepting of others for who they are. I am not saying everyone has to like everyone else, but I am saying at least give everyone else a chance to shine and join the group. When a smart nerdy group of socially unaccepted girls get a new playhouse bunny house mother they turn into a stereotypical group of rude sorority girls who just want everyone to be in their house so they can be more popular as long as they are ‘normal.’ If people took the time to accept everyone and give everyone a chance, people would have more friends and not be as nervous to try to make new friends. Getting involved on campus is smart as long as you are getting involved in the right ways with the right group of people so you can make a difference in your community. Getting involved also has advantages, because it can help manage time and studying habits or even study groups. Involvement in the college community is smart so good grades can be attained, meaning better opportunities later. Managing your time and taking the time to study receives full benefits later, as well. College is not easy, especially when coming in as a freshman new to the whole idea of college. However, college can be enjoyed and mastered if you try to get involved, study more, accepts more people for who they are, and manage your time to the best of your ability. Looking At The History Of Domestic Violence Social Work Essay The Experience of Domestic Abuse Amongst South Asian Women How issues of domestic abuse arise in Asian families is it prevalent amongst Asian communities more than Western European communities, or is this a myth created by media what are underlying cultural issues (ie. Forced marriages, honour killings/violence, mental abuse, physical abuse, rape, etc) how does the community/family respond to domestic abuse when it is perpetuated, how are the women treated, is their support from within the community for these women Domestic violence can have an enormous effect on your mental health. It is now well accepted that abuse (both in childhood and in adult life) is often the main factor in the development of depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders, and may lead to sleep disturbances, self-harm, suicide and attempted suicide, eating disorders and substance misuse. (See References.) Abused women are at least three times more likely to experience depression or anxiety disorders than other women. One-third of all female suicide attempts and half of those by Black and ethnic minority women can be attributed to past or current experiences of domestic violence. Women who use mental health services are much more likely to have experienced domestic violence than women in the general population. 70% of women psychiatric in-patients and 80% of those in secure settings have histories of physical or sexual abuse. Children who live with domestic violence are at increased risk of behavioural problems and emotional trauma, and mental health difficulties in adult life. (See also Children and domestic violence.) An audit in Greenwich found that 60% of mental health service users had experienced domestic violence. Another survey of women using mental health services in Leeds found that half of them had experienced domestic violence and a further quarter had suffered sexual abuse. How your mental health can be used to abuse you further If you have a mental health diagnosis, your partner may have used this to abuse you even more. For example, by: Saying you couldnt cope without him. Saying youre mad. Not allowing you to go anywhere alone because he is your carer. Speaking for you: You know you get confused/youre not very confident/you dont understand the issues. Telling you youre a bad mother and cannot look after the children properly. Forcing you to have an abortion because you couldnt cope. Threatening to take the children away. Threatening to tell Social Services the implication being they will take the children away. Telling the children Mummy cant look after you. Deliberately misleading or confusing you. Withholding your medication. Withholding or coercing you into using alcohol or drugs. Undermining you when you disclose the abuse or ask for help: You cant believe her shes mad. These tactics will almost certainly add to your emotional distress and exacerbate any existing mental health issues. If you have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder, you will be in a particularly vulnerable position, and are likely to find it even harder to report domestic violence than other women. You are likely to suffer from a sense of shame because of the stigma attached in our society to having mental illness of any kind, and you may feel even more powerless. Furthermore, the response of the service providers is also likely to be more problematic, due to the stigma of being mentally ill: They may not believe you when you disclose abuse. They may see you only when your partner is present. They may accept your partners account at face value. They may feel sympathy for your partner After all he has had to put up with or blame you for the abuse. They may judge you (particularly if you are self-harming or have attempted suicide, or if you use alcohol or drugs). Dont blame yourself! Your mental health difficulties are not your fault, and you are not responsible for the abuse: the abuser is. You are entitled to help as much as any other abused woman, and if you have additional support needs, you should get help with them too. Some refuge organisations are unable to offer accommodation to women with severe mental health needs because they have insufficient resources to provide suitable support. However, other refuges will be able to accommodate you and all refuge organisations should be able to find you somewhere else to go. If you have decided to leave your abuser, you could ring the Freephone 24 Hour National Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 2000 247, run in partnership between Womens Aid and Refuge, which will be able to put you in touch with a refuge organisation that can provide accommodation that meets your support needs. Mental health services Despite the frequent overlap between domestic violence and mental ill health, mental health professionals seem generally to ignore the issue of abuse. They are unlikely to ask you about it and may therefore be unaware of it. You yourself may feel unable to disclose the abuse to your GP or to your community psychiatric nurse (CPN) or your psychiatrist (if you have one). So you may find that the reasons for your depression or other difficulties are ignored. You may feel blamed for the abuse. And you are very likely simply to be offered medication (such as tranquillisers, anti-depressants or sleeping pills) instead of being given an opportunity to talk about what is happening or has happened to you. When mental health professionals do take domestic violence into account, they may still disagree about the causes of your condition and how to treat it. For example, some psychologists believe that the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), most often associated with wars or natural disasters such as fire or earthquake, or experiences such as torture or being held hostage, can be appropriately applied to survivors of domestic violence. Other people argue that anxiety and depression, and even self-harm or suicide attempts may be the normal response to the experience of long-term abuse. While depression tends to ease when women are no longer being abused this will not happen immediately. It may take a long time for you to come to terms with what has happened. You may suffer continued abuse and harassment long after the relationship itself has ended and you are likely to live in fear of it for much longer. You may also experience flashbacks long after the violence has ceased. See Surviving after abuse: Looking after yourself and moving on for some suggestions on how to deal with this. Counselling All women who are experiencing or have experienced domestic violence will need emotional support of some kind, but their needs will vary. All women need to be listened to with respect and without being judged when they choose to talk about their experiences. They want to be believed and to feel they have been understood. Mutual support from other women who have had similarly abusive experiences can be very valuable: it will help you to feel less isolated and to recognise that none of the abuse you experienced was your fault. You will get this kind of support if you go into a refuge, or if you use a Womens Aid outreach service, or join a support group. Some women may benefit from more formal counselling or psychotherapy though not usually while they are still living with their abuser or immediately after escaping from the violence, when physical safety and practical issues are likely to be of greater concern. If you decide you would like some counselling, the following information may help you. Counselling is a two-way relationship, in which the counsellor listens to whatever you want to say, in confidence and without making judgements. Counsellors are not supposed to give advice, but they may ask questions or challenge you in ways which may help you to look more carefully at some of the assumptions you may have taken for granted. Usually you will have regular sessions, for an hour or slightly less, each week or every two weeks. Psychotherapy tends to be more intensive than counselling, and may continue for a longer period of time, as issues are explored in more depth. Some people, however, use these terms interchangeably. The aim of counselling is to help you understand yourself better and come to terms with what has happened to you. Good counselling will help you to break away from past abusive relationships and work towards living in a way which is more satisfactory and fulfilling for you. It can also help you to build up your self esteem. However, counselling is not for everyone and you have to decide whether it is right for you and whether this is the right time for it. If you decide you want some counselling, it is important that the counsellor or therapist you choose is right for you, and that she is appropriately qualified and experienced. She should also have a good understanding of domestic violence and its effects, and should take care not to appear to blame you or make you feel guilty in any way for the abuse you experienced. Styles of counselling differ a lot depending in part on the theoretical approach of the counsellor or therapist and you may find some approaches more helpful then others. In some parts of the country, there are counselling services specifically set up by women for women, and many of these have a particular focus on issues of violence and abuse. Some also offer support groups for survivors of domestic violence. Some of these are listed at the end of this section. If you contact your local Womens Aid organisation, they may be able to put you in touch with a counselling service or support group in your area. Some counselling organisations offer sessions that are free of charge; others charge a fee dependent on your income. Your GP surgery may have a counsellor to which your doctor could refer you, or he or she might refer you to an NHS psychologist though there could be a long waiting list. NHS services will be free of charge, but may be time-limited. Alternatively, you could contact an organisation such as the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) which can give you a list of trained and accredited counsellors in your area. These will charge an hourly fee, though some may have concessionary rates for those on low incomes. In each case, it is important that you feel happy with your counsellor, and are able to build up a rapport and a sense of trust in the relationship. Enter Career Planning With such a complex world picture hanging in the background it is crucial to understand the importance of Career Planning and Development. As mentioned earlier, the demand for work has gone beyond the nine-to-five framework. If employees are to survive and protect their jobs, constant career planning and development is vital. Today high-performance may not guarantee job security and employees especially in large organizations face enormous challenges. Now, life long careers are a thing of the past. Some naÃÆ'Â ¯ve employees still feel that they are immune to ongoing reductions because theyre doing good work and adding value to the organization (Stone, 2008). This nature of shifting jobs across companies, functions and industries is called Boundary-less Careers. The vulnerability to career stagnation is what makes career planning so much important for todays employees. It is necessary for promotions, but most importantly for survival. Hence, it cannot be ignored by any right-thinki ng employee. The future seems no longer guaranteed for even high-performing employees according to management guru Charles Handy (cited in Stone, 2008, p. 390). This is due to todays ever-changing work environment. Organizations, as large and monolithic as they may seem also tends to be more flexible and fast paced. In such a scenario, adoptability will come in handy. Therefore the need for intelligent career planning and development cannot be overstated. This will in turn help the employee as well as the organization itself. The employee of the modern era The frontiers of management thinking have placed the modern day employee as both the master as well as the slave. There seems to be a thin line between the choices of survival and death in the workplace. This fine line comprises of bundles of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. But these competencies only will not suffice for survival unless they are methodically planned and carried out by both the employee and employer. This methodical plan or survival-kit is what career planning is. The employee of the modern era will have to be multi-skilled, but should NOT take it for grant. He or she should be ready to switch industries, companies, or functions. As Dual Careers become widespread the family circle tends to become smaller and smaller. The current employee is demanded for more and more working time and he or she has to inevitably put work above family resulting in work-family conflict. According to Coyle (cited in Stone, 2008, p. 405), families are a problem for companies. These are just some of the challenges the modern day employee will have to face in a rapidly changing business-socio-political environment. Therefore, a sound understanding of the need to plan their career ahead and stick to it (being flexible when necessary and adopting accordingly) is so vital. The thoroughness of planning the career will only promise future security in todays organizations. In the middle of downsizing and mergers acquisitions, the modern employee will be squeezed in to protect his or her job. This report will focus on the importance of career planning and development and analyze the reasons on why it has received so much attention in the contemporary workplace as well as the advantage of developing effective career plans for both employees and organizations. From time to time as mentioned in the introduction, when human society faces massive changes in life-style, inevitably new social discourses tend to surface. Social discourses such as, Global Warming Globalization and Nuclear experiments are a few recently sprung up ones to name. But since recently a new social discourse has begun to spring up concerning the workplace and employees. It is Career Planning Development. This new social talk began to emerge as a result of the continuous complexity business is shaping into, making it hard for many employees to cope up with the pace of change. Hence, the subject of career planning and development has received wide attention in both theory and practice of management. This is not an overrated idea since it is quite visible in front of the eyes that employee turnover is rapidly rising, job switching is increasing, and part-time jobs are becoming more sought after. Employee turnover is much more costly than you might think. In fact, research shows that up to 80% of turnover costs are hidden. Because of these virtually invisible costs, most managers usually do not track turnover or are not alarmed by high turnover rates (Farrell, 2010). An increased turnover rate ultimately suggests that employees do not remain in one organization for a long period. This may be principally because most organizations as well as employees do not engage in methodical career planning. Employees who would think that this is an overrated idea, and thus fail to plan the career ahead will ultimately suffer from Career Plateaus or become victims of downsizing, acquisitions, and other forms of corporate action. Therefore, it is very important to plan ones career ahead. Let us begin with what career planning development is by examining two of its definitions and then its scope. What Career Planning Development is Definition In HRM theory, it is defined as follows Giving employees assistance to develop realistic career goals and the opportunities to realize them (Stone, 2008) It will be beneficial if we also look at other definitions of the key terms. The Dictionary of Human Resources and Personnel Management defines these key terms as follows Career Planning: the examination of the way in which career opportunities are available, leading to advice on which careers to pursue or how to further an employees existing career Career Development: planning of an employees future career in an organization If at all possible, career planning should be viewed as two fold. Career Planning Development The Employee (Planning) The Organization (Development) As shown in both the above definitions, there are two inherent parts to the phrase Career Planning and Development. This twofold definition entails the two parties that involve in the practice of career planning development. In a nutshell, planning concerns the employee, and development concerns the organization. For the successful completion of a career planning action, therefore, both the parties are responsible. Career Planning which concerns the Employee As mentioned above career planning is of utmost importance to the employee given the current nature of global business. Engaging in career planning gives the person a deep understanding on what his or her life and work goals are and what has to be done in order to achieve them. Todays corporate employee cannot afford to just float around within the organization doing a mundanely satisfactory job. The well-defined career ladders are a thing of the past. Why is it necessary to plan ones career ahead? Chiefly, the reason is because skills become obsolete. The skill that was required two years ago may not necessarily be of need in the present. Most of the times, technology and new structures replace positions and employees. This results in skills obsolescence. Thus, the necessity for employees to build skills is stressed. Also, even though one might be a highly effective and high potential employee it doesnt guarantee one total job security (Dessler, 2005). This leaves the employee in an unstable state of affairs, finally resulting in dissatisfaction and corporate deviance. Even high potential employees need to be trained and given a right direction to pursue; a direction that promises future fulfillment and opportunities. In building skills as a part of career planning, a logical question would be What skills am I to develop? This question will be answered during the process of planning. It is the responsibility of the organization to create opportunities to match employee goals and to clearly point out what skills will be promising in an ever-changing job market. Some other questions an employee may have to ask oneself as part of career planning: What is important to me? How ready am I to work hard? Do I want to remain in this industry? Stone Career Development which concerns the Organization Just as it is important to individual employees, career development is of increasing importance to the organization as well. Chiefly, as mentioned above (Farrell, 2010) there is a great amount of cost that organizations accrue due to employee turnover. Career development concerns the organization in many other ways too. This, which is centered on training employees will increase skills, and thereby make possible their goals are achieved. Along with the training the organization should create opportunities aligning the new skills of the employees. Fisher, Schoenfeldt, and Shaw (2006) say, Training can help an organization succeed in a number of ways. Ultimately, it is employee knowledge that produces the organizations product or service. An organization that can produce more qualified employees in less time will have a competitive advantage. Although the above statement emphasizes more on training, training is a part of career development which is designed to align skills with career opportunities. Therefore, as mentioned above, we can discern that career development will ultimately result in skills aligning with jobs, thus, giving the organization a competitive advantage. Snell, Bohlander (2007) states, research shows that an organizations revenues and overall profitability are positively correlated to the amount of training it gives its employees. Also, as a byproduct, an increased level of motivation will enable employees to be more productive (effectiveness efficiency). The Strategic need for career development Linking employers strategy with the needs of the employee is the key aspect of career planning and development. Strategically an organization should decide on what positions are required to achieve organizational goals. Once the positions are filled, necessary arrangements should be made to offer opportunities for career development. Dessler (2008) says, employment planning should flow from the firms strategic plans. The process of deciding what positions to fill and how to fill them is what development is all about. And when doing so, what new career opportunities are to be offered and the methods of achieving them has to be clearly communicated to every employee (EEO). Forecasting personnel needs, as a part of career development can be done through trend-analysis and ratio-analysis (Dessler, 2008). The study of the firms past employment needs and by using ratios between two variables (such as sales volume and the number of staff to achieve that) can help decide properly the extent to which the firm has to develop careers; to what extent employees may reach their desired goals. Finally, career development as a concern for the organization must be strategically aligned since employee planning should necessarily be within the parameters of organizational direction. Now, let us look at some general advantages that Career Planning and Development offers both the employee and the organization. Although at first the firm may perceive hardships (financially and otherwise) on career development, eventually the efforts will prove to be fruitful. The Role of Human Resources when it comes to Career Planning The function of HRM when it comes to career planning and development has the enormous task or burden of activating the process. Clearly it is a function of the HRM department to involve in realizing the career planning and development process. In doing so, the HR department aligns its own objectives to the process as well as the entire objectives of the organization. Combining Ulrichs Model of HRM roles to Career Planning and Development The model which was presented by Ulrich suggested four key roles of the HR manager. These four roles can be incorporated with career planning and development. It is as follows: Strategic Partner: by involving in career planning and development the HR manager fulfills the responsibility of strategic partner by aligning company objectives with employee goals and thereby creating an environment in which employees can develop and rise within the organization. This strategic move will enable the firm to fulfill its requirement of a talented pool of workforce. This will eventually contribute to the long-term objectives of the firm. This will fulfill the role as strategic partner. Administrative Expert: the long-term efficiency which will be instilled within the organization due to successful career planning and development will eventually play the role of Administrative Expert. As an administrative expert, HR will create value by placing right people at the right place. The value HR generates by developing jobs will be indispensible for the entire organization. Employee Champion: this is the role which requires the HR manager to be the employees voice in management decisions. The HR manager must be able to relate to and meet the needs of employees (Stone, 2008). What career planning and development does is EXACTLY relating to employees needs. The HR manager goes a step further and relates to the needs of the organization as well, aligning them both together to effect major change. HR also makes an effort to make champions out of employees, and thereby strengthening organizational commitment. Change Agent: the catalyst for change is brought about by the HR manager when he or she affects a whole plan of change within the organization which is career planning and development. Thereby proves, that HRM is a more AFFECTIVE function within the organization that can affect positive change benefitting the long-term objectives. The above description showed how Career Planning Development can be seen in the light of Ulrichs model of 4 Roles for HR managers. To put in a nutshell, Career Planning and Development is one of the major activities of the HR department of an organization. The first part of this essay dealt with the importance of career planning and development, and why it has attracted so much attention in the contemporary workplace. Also the advantages of career planning and development was said to concern both the employee and the organization. Now, we shall look at how an effective career planning and development strategy can be brought about and what factors should be included in such an action plan. Following are my suggestions. PART II Building a Successful Career Planning Development Strategy In building and implementing a successful Career Planning and Development Strategy, an organization may have to ponder over the importance of such a plan as mentioned earlier. It will benefit the organization in many ways as previously stated (Snell, Bohlander, 2007) correlating with revenue and profitability. Heading to the future Company Goals Employee Needs This simple diagram distills everything that was described earlier. It shows that in order to implement a successful development plan, the objectives of the two involved parties must be aligned; thereby reach a common goal in the long-run. Assessing Company goals (with regard to the employ development plan): As a first step, it is extremely necessary for the firm to assess its long-term and short-term employee need. In doing so, the following questions could be asked: What are the long term objectives of the firm? How important are employees to the firm? To which extent does the firm ready to compromise in order to make employees satisfied? Does the firm believe the advantages in having a work-friendly environment? Assessing Employee Needs: Through thorough communication (also with the help of questionnaires) the firm should then asses the needs of the employees with regard to their occupation. Some of the questions that could be asked may include What are your long term career goals? What is your current level of skill? How ready and willing are you to work hard in order to learn new skills? Do you feel your skill may be threatened by skills obsolescence? Do you believe in organizational commitment? Aligning organizational and employ needs Depending on the industry the firm is operating in, and also considering the financial implications, the firm has to then design a lucrative job opportunity system within the firm. In this system, bureaucracyÂÂ  must be held at a minimum while EEO and Affirmative Action should be enhanced. A clear path should be shown to every employee regardless of gender, race, etc. Also it must be communicated to the employee on how the overall plan supports the entire system how every part of the planning and development strategy aligns with company and individual objectives. Encourage Communication within the Organization In order to make employees open up and express their needs, the top management has to make sure that all communication barriers are set down. The need for open, honest communication cannot be overstated in making an employee development plan. Employees have to be equally treated (EEO) regardless of ethnicity, gender, etc. Once open communication reveals what workers expect, the job of the HR department becomes easier. This is a culture that has to be created and maintained. Effective cultures promote effective results. Corporate culture is an effective informal control mechanism (Dowling Welch, 2004). Training Employees This is an area that has won wide approval throughout organizations in all parts of the word. Training employees has now become one of the major costs of large organizations; a cost that is worth taking. The employee training session will last for a period of time and the necessary logistics have to be prepared in advance (location, materials, resource providers etc.) Some of the factors that need to be considered when training: Have in mind the main purpose of training Make sure the employ is trained as an individual; not a pawn of the company Give employees plenty of freedom But have in mind the need to align employee needs with organizational objectives Build honest, long-term trust with employees How will you measure effectiveness? Monitor progress Make use of psychometric tests (such as the BIG 5 TEST) 6. Dont make the career plan to complicated AÂÂ  careerÂÂ  plan that is over detailed and leaves no room or time to respond to changes in external or internal circumstances could become a problem (Career Planning 5 Critical Mistakes, 2010). Many organizations make the mistake of writing too fancy and vivid career plans which make no sense at all to the employee. Ultimately this results in not benefitting both the employee as well as the firm. An easy to follow plan should be written that will enable both parties to understand and workout with minimum amount of friction. Conclusion This report dealt with one of the major social discourses of modern times, which is career planning and development its importance, scope, and advantages. The subject of career planning has been the talk of current theory and practice of management. The attention it has attracted in current management thought proves the fact that unless employers and employees engage in methodical career planning both parties will not achieve maximum utilization of the human resource of the firm. Human beings, by nature can be trained and developed unlike other animals on earth. This fact has so been proved throughout history. The current instable state of affairs of the world does not seem to end in the near future. Global warming is rampant; threats of nuclear wars are mildly surfacing; the internet has made communication jump a massive leap within a couple of years. Modern city life seems like a challenge of overcoming competition, cut-throat business, monolithic corporations, media fabrication and news biases. The governments that promised to be of the people; by the people; for the people has turned out to become larger institutions of imperialism (although without colony). Now they have become the government of the corporation; by the corporation; for the corporation As the power of the corporation gains strength over human civilization, where consummation of goods and services are primary elements, the role of the employee has ironically become that of the master, as well as the slave. To avoid the bad repercussions of the current system the world has shaped into, the modern employee will have to be steadfast in accumulating the needed competencies through proper, systematic, and methodical career planning and development. Even if the citizen changes his or her role for employee to entrepreneur the need for career planning and development will spring up. Organizations too, as mentioned earlier in the report, have many benefits from career development. As part-time working is becoming the trend, and dual careers appear, the current turnover rate of employees is in an increasing trend. So, in order to retain talent, increase organizational commitment, promote corporate-citizenship-behavior, it is crucial for an organization to build and develop careers as a strategic move to survive. With the employer-employee collaboration only will the problem of uncertainty be overcome. That employer-employee collaboration is what Career Planning Development addresses at. End.

Roethkes Use of Tone Essay -- My Papas Waltz Poems Poetry Essays

Roethke's Use of Tone   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Childhood experiences seem to be the ones that are recollected most vividly throughout a person's life. Almost everyone can remember some aspect of his or her childhood experiences, pleasant and unpleasant alike. Theodore Roethke's poem "My Papa's Waltz" suggests even further that this concept could be true. The dance described in this poem illustrates an interaction between father and child that contains more than the expected joyous, loving attitude between the two characters. Roethke's tone in this work exhibits the blended, yet powerful emotions that he, as a grown man, feels when looking back on this childhood experience. The author somewhat implicates feelings of resentment fused with a loving reliance with his father.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  For example, the first two lines of the poem read: "The whiskey on your breath/ Could make a small boy dizzy;" (Roethke 668). This excerpt appears to set a dark sort of mood for the entire rest of the poem. By the first two lines, the reader may already see how this man feels about his father's drunkenness. It seems as if Roethke has preceded his poem with this factor in order to demonstrate the resentment that he feels toward his father.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  However, the last two lines of the poem suggest feelings other than resentment: "Then waltzed me off to bed/ Still clinging to your shirt" (Roethke 668). By mentioning the fact that his father put him to bed, Roethke seems to show affectionate feelings Bridges 2 involved in this dance. He shows his caring feelings in the last line by using the words "still clinging". "Certainly, this small boy's family life has its frightening side, but the last line suggests the boy is still clinging to his father with persistent if also complicated love" (Kennedy and Gioia 668). Although their dance appears to be "comic", Roethke seems to possess "an odd and ambivalent closeness" to his apparently intoxicated father (Balakian 62).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Still even more evidence of these mixed feelings is illustrated in the third stanza. "This love dance, a kind of blood rite between father and son, shows suppressed terror combined with awe-inspired dependency" (Balakian 62). "The hand that held my wrist/was battered on one knuckle;/ At every step you missed/ My right ear scraped a buckle"(Roethke 668). The speaker's father's hand being "battered on one knuckle" is indicative of a man who... ... quite demonstrative of how Bridges 5 powerful his feelings for his father must have been. "†¦Roethke tried, through careful revisions to balance negative and positive tones in 'My Papa's Waltz'" (McKenna 36).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Although the dance between him and his father was rough and aggressive, the very fact that Roethke chose to write about the waltz indicates that it is a special moment he remembers sharing with his father. The poet has a remarkable ability to describe the moment and not his feelings. Should Marijuana be Legalized for AIDS Use? Fifteen years ago the word AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) was barely used in the United States. Today, it's on the cover of every newspaper, and parents and kids discuss it regularly in the household. It is no longer considered someone else's problem; it is now everyone's problem. Not a day goes by that a person doesn't worry about AIDS. The fear of AIDS is heightened only by the fact that there is no cure. People with AIDS must live with the fact that they are eventually going to die. Their death comes slowly and painfully. Each day they take pills and shots that provide temporary relief, but in the long run, they only make matters worse. Some pill's side effects are worse than some of the disease's symptoms. What if there was a drug that could ease some of this pain? Scientists and researchers seem to believe that they have found this miracle drug. Believe it or not, this miracle drug has been used for decades. Just recently, medical doctors suggested that marijuana be used to treat some symptoms of AIDS. This proposal brings forth both medical and ethical questions. Why exactly should marijuana be legalized for AIDS use? Many doctors believe that cannabis is particularly useful in the treatment of AIDS Wasting Syndrome. They believe that it causes the patient to develop an appetite, therefore causing them to gain weight. It is also believed that marijuana helps relieve nausea caused by AIDS and other AIDS treatments. Patients have gone on record stating that marijuana has helped tremendously in the relief of AIDS related illnesses. If marijuana has been used for so many years why are we just now recognizing its medical potential? Marijuana has been suggested for medical use for many years, and yet it has always been put on the back burner. This brings up the ethical side of the argument. In the past decades marijuana has been highly abused. The main concern of legalizing this drug is that the government is making it easier for anyone to buy it on the street. The government also wants to get the point across that smoking cannabis isn't going to make the disease go away; it may only help stop some of the pain. This argument doesn't seem to have a correct answer. On one hand we can lock down and keep marijuana away from our children, and on the other we can let sick people suffer.

The Current regulatory policy touching on the healthcare professionals is grounded on the believe that the marketplace of these professionals services fails because of the lack of full information concerning the healthcare services on the part of the consumers of these services (Haas-Wilson, 2010). That way a number of professionals in this field can offer low quality services at prices that are not commensurate to the quality of the services to gullible consumers without the fear of being told to account for these compromised services that even flout professional ethics of the healthcare profession (Haas-Wilson, 2010).Healthcare professional are always very quick to defend the existence of these regulations arguing that they ensure that healthcare professionals are offering high quality healthcare services to each and every client of these services irrespective of whether they are informed of their right to quality healthcare services or not (Drake, 2008). Whether they ensure qualit y service to clients the way healthcare professionals argues is still a subject of intense debate.However, it is not in contention that by dictating the minimum qualification and experience that a healthcare professional should have in order to practices, there a big number of quacks who are restrain from infiltrating the lucrative healthcare market (Drake, 2008). The regulatory agencies that have been mandated to pass rules and regulations that will be used to govern the practice of the healthcare professional is also another major step at protecting the clients of these services and ensuring that they get only the best and most appropriate services.The restriction especially on advertising on the other hand which also makes up these regulations also go along way in enabling that the clients of these services make informed decision free from any influence when looking for the healthcare services. Reasons for the existence of mal-distribution of physicians in spite the high number o f physicians graduating from medical school The problem of mal-distribution of the healthcares professional is not a new phenomenon in the United States especially in the rural areas (Rapaport, 1980).This has continued despite the government intervention and even the high number of medical graduates graduating from our universities and other institutions of higher learning offering medical disciplines. Healthcare professional in this case refers to the likes of nurses, nurse practitioners, physician, and physician assistants. One of the reasons for this state of affair is due to the fact a large number of healthcare practitioners prefers to locate their medical facilities in the metropolitan areas because of their high population (Sign, & Shi, 2009).Another factor that is aggravating the already worse situation is the fact that many medical practitioners are leaving graduate school as specialists like retina specialist thereby making their application in the rural areas untenable (S ign, & Shi, 2009). Effects of this distribution in the context of diverse special populations There are a number of problems that are associated with this mal-distribution in the United States, some of these concerns that are associated with this kind of lopsided distribution include cost, access and finally quality.With scanty availability of healthcare services in most rural areas the question of high cost begin to haunt the consumers of this services. The few who are practicing in these rural areas can increase costs of these services without improving on quality of the same (Sign, & Shi, 2009). The same applies to the quality of the services which happens because of few practitioners, lack of enough information and inadequate regulation (Rapaport, 1980).
